Northumberland Bird Watcher – 20/9/11

This is one of my favourite places for watching birds and walking.  It’s a short drive east from Alnwick, has a free car park and to walk north towards Craster or south towards Warkworth is equally delightful.  The morning was sunny and bright with little wind, perfect.  Today the group met just north of the village to enjoy the waders that are returning after their summer break and collect on the sand and weeds by the shore.  The usual suspects were busily eating, many redshanks, oystercatchers, bar-tailed godwits and dunlin.  Four juvenile shelduck swam across the water, large flocks gulls sat on the weed while a grey heron stood by the rocks.We walked south through the village where a big flock of starlings swirled and swooped around the houses making a variety of patterns in the air.  Apart from two Read More »

2011 ALNMOUTH BEER FESTIVAL

PREPARATIONS are well underway for the second Alnmouth Beer Festival.

The three-day event is sure to tickle the taste buds with 30 beers and ciders from across Britain on offer.

Welcome to my bird watching blog.  I am a enthusiastic, if not very talented bird watcher, who goes out each Tuesday with friends to enjoy the birds in Northumberland. This Tuesday’s bird watching was enjoyable if not very productive mainly due to a ferocious westerly gale.  We first stopped at Monk’s Pool, which is situated between Seahouses and Bamburgh (O.S.75  204336) on the western side of the road.  In the 1950′s ‘Monk’s House Bird Observatory’, on the sore side, was opened by Eric Ennion and it was here that Bill Oddie enjoyed his early bird watching.  Read More »

NORTHUMBERLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Northumberland Music Festival, bringing together nationally celebrated classic, operatic and traditional musicians at Doxford Hall and Eshott Hall in the heart of Northumberland. Featuring performances of Grand Opera to Gilbert and Sullivan and Schubert to Colliery Bands.

Each event is hosted at beautiful Northumbrian venues Doxford Hall, Eshott Hall or Guyzance Hall and ticket options include dinner, Champagne or Bucks Fizz reception drinks and canapes.

10% of all ticket sales are donated directly to the following charities: Great North Air Ambulance, MacMillan Cancer Support, North Northumberland Hospice Care.

The event runs from the 28th October untill the 6th of November and includes music of many different genres including string quartets and Opera.
